If
a visit to the famed Okefenokee Swamp is one of your travel destinations,
then Laura S. Walker State Park is the ideal place to camp. The
626 acre park is located just 2 miles south of US 82 on SR 177.
Laura Walker was a teacher, writer and civic leader who had a
passion for conservation before it was fashionable. This Georgia
park is one of a few that have been named for women.
There
are 44 sites situated in a nicely wooded grove of pine adjacent
to Lake Laura S. Walker (120 acres). The shower building was
older but, well maintained and convenient to our campsite. We
occupied a lakeside site (premium) which had water and electric
(30 amp) hook-ups. Our cost was $17.00 per night (01/00). The
park also contains an 18-hole championship golf course.
While
there, a visit to the Okefenokee Swamp Park is highly recommended.
The Okefenokee Swamp covers more than 600 square miles and is
composed of a maze of waterways and islands. The Okefenokee Swamp
Park is a commercial attraction that provides interesting insights
into the swamp, its evolution, and social aspects. You will also
be able to take boat trips into the swamp and see, first hand,
the creature of the swamp, including alligators. For more information
